Ken Cassidy Closes Out Dazzling Season With Historic Mini Stock Win At Waterford

WATERFORD – The numbers tell a story of pure domination of the Mini Stock division in 2012 for Ken Cassidy Jr.

Saturday he put a historic exclamation point on the season.

Cassidy, of Lisbon, held off Ray Christian III on a green-white-checkered restart to win the 50-lap Mini Stock feature at Waterford’s Finale Weekend.

The race began on Oct. 7 with 22 laps completed before rain came, ending the day at the Speedbowl.

Christian, of Norwich, was second and Jeffrey Cembruch of Wallingford third.

Cassidy had already clinched his fourth championship in the division before Saturday’s event.

It was the 12th victory in 21 starts this year for Cassidy, setting a Mini Stock division record for wins in season. Dan Darnstaedt set the previous record of 11 in 1995. Cassidy came into the season as the division’s all-time winningest driver overall.

“I’ve pulled off a lot of wins, but I was like, ‘Nobody is ever going to catch that,’ Cassidy said of Darnstaedt’s record. “There’s no way, the competition is way too steep.’ We won seven out of the first eight races, then we fell off for like three races. I was just like ‘Man, we’ve got to get these wins if we’re going to go after this.’ It’s awesome. Totally awesome.”

Cassidy now has 43 career victories in the division over eight seasons. Cassidy had 19 top-five’s in 2012, 20 top-10’s and had an average finish of third this year. He also was the NASCAR Home Tracks Finalist program Division IV asphalt National Championship.

“This has been an awesome year,” Cassidy said. “I’ve been racing seven year and this is by far the best. I can put two seasons together and still not beat this. Two championships, 12 wins, it’s unbelievable.”

Cassidy led every lap on Saturday.

“I love the competition but my car was stuttering on the restarts,” Cassidy said. “Raymond was actually really good on the restarts. I didn’t wan to see that last restart when I was sputtering like that. But it all worked out.”
